Problem

The text contains bit.ly/xxxx, han.gl/xxxx or me2.do/xxxx. Until you tap, you cannot see where it goes — a bank notice, a shop promotion or a phishing site.

Short links were invented to fit long addresses into messages, so legitimate companies and agencies use them widely. That is exactly why smishing uses them most: they hide a fake address.

Symptoms

  • The text only has a short address; the destination is invisible.
  • Tapping a short link bounced through several addresses before a page opened.
  • The page’s address has nothing to do with the company named in the text.
  • The final address is an .apk file or the page asks for an app install.

See the real destination without tapping

1. Use a checker that follows redirects for you. The simplest way. A short link works by the server answering “go to this address” (a redirect), so following that answer somewhere other than your phone reveals the final address. Follow every hop: the first destination is often another short link.

2. Use the preview feature. Some shorteners show a preview page when you add + to the end of the link. Not every service supports it, and a double-shortened link only reveals the first step.

3. Read the final address correctly. Look at the last domain. The real domain of kbstar.com.secure-login.xyz is secure-login.xyz, not kbstar.com. Then check how old that domain is.

Diagnose with DechoNet

  • Paste the short link or the whole message into the phishing link check. It follows up to six redirects on the server and shows every hop and the final address. It never downloads the page body, so your phone never visits the site. It also checks the final domain’s age, brand imitation, APK downloads and phishing feeds.
  • The HTTP header check shows the redirect chain and response headers in detail.
  • Domain registration lookup shows the final domain’s registration date and registrar.

Resolution Checklist

  • Check a short link’s final address before tapping.
  • If there are several redirects, check the last one.
  • Confirm the last domain is the official one.
  • Do not open it if the final domain is new or ends in .apk.
  • When in doubt, skip the link and use the company’s official app.

When to Escalate

Paste the message and check it now

Paste the whole message or just the link. The text is not stored; each link is followed to where it really goes.
